John practises Aboriginal Law and Government Relationsthrough his firm, Pan Pacific Law Corporation. He speaks publicly on matters relating to those areas, as well as on Leadership and National Health and Fitness, subjects discussed in his recent book On! Achieving Excellence in Leadership and on his Blog. He serves as President of the National Health and Fitness Foundation.
Born in Vancouver, John is a graduate of Harvard University, with a degree in Government, specializing in International Relations (1980). He obtained his law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto (1983), then completed the Owner/President Management Program at Harvard Business School (1998).
Having studied in six countries and worked in Asia and Canada, John has a decidedly broad international perspective. He is a member of the Bars of British Columbia and New York and the Law Society of England and Wales. Multilingual, he speaks English, Mandarin, and French and has studied German, Spanish, Polish, and Latin. He practised law in Taiwan with Baker & McKenzie and Bennett Jones Verchere Weston and in Canada with Russell DuMoulin, Access Law Group, and McMillan LLP. While in Taiwan, he was one of the first two Canadians to work at the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei.
In his student years, he had a front-row seat in patriation of Canada’s Constitution, working in Constitutional Affairs for BC’s Deputy Minister of Constitutional Affairs in the summers of 1979, 1980, and 1981, and in 1982 for the Government of Quebec. He also initiated the Canadian Constitution Foundation, a charitable foundation which promotes individual rights.
John served as one of the most productive Members of Parliament (West Vancouver – Sunshine Coast – Sea to Sky Country, 2008-2015). During those two Parliamentary Sessions, he was one of only two MP’s who passed two Private Member's Bills and got three private member initiatives to First Reading. John advocated effectively for over 100 projects in his riding, which benefited from over $280 million in Federal funding. John’s was one of the top-rated MP websites in 2013 and 2014.
In Parliament, John’s roles included serving on the Citizenship & Immigration and Fisheries Committees, and on the Caucus Advisory Committee for the Minister of Aboriginal & Northern Affairs. He led the Conservative Caucus on Substance Abuse and the Conservative Community Relations Caucus; and served as the first ever Government Liaison to the Canadian-Iranian Community. He initiated the inter-party fitness programs for MPs; promoted national health; and is a Founding Director of the National Health and Fitness Foundation.
John lives in both Vancouver and Ottawa and travels where clients need him. He and his active family - wife, Donna, and children, Shane, Jake, and Meimei - enjoy a wide range of sports, including running, biking, tennis, swimming, and skiing.
